Stainsbridge Yet another bridge/mill complex. The name of this bridge is much easier to trace - Robert the Thane (local leader) lived in or near Brokenborough and built this river crossing in the 13th century. The name evolved from "the Thane's bridge" to Stainsbridge through time. This is one of the four Malmesbury bridges which originally was in the neighbouring parish of St Mary Westport. The bridge gave access to the "foena lands" (filands) and to the Abbey lands at Charlton. In the 1960s this bridge was widened and strengthened. The old bridge can still be seen from the pathway, nestling midway of the span.
